Ciro Salvo’s 50 Kalò In London named the Best European Pizzeria outside of Italy
Pizza is a global phenomenon which is undergoing a significant evolution in quality. Is it about time someone pays tribute to and spotlights those individuals who have been able to distinguish themselves for the quality of the product they offer?
Aiming to provide a veritable global map of high-quality pizza never before seen, the 50 Top Pizza list was born.
The 2019 edition of 50 Top Pizza is the first of its kind and probably the most extensive online guide to the best pizzerias in Italy, Europe and even the world.
This year’s list is led by Ciro Salvo’s 50 Kalò In London as number one named Best European Pizzeria outside of Italy following closely by Bijou in Paris, owned by Gennaro Nasti and Bæst in Copenhagen, owned by the Sicilian-Danish Christian Puglisi.
England (with 10 placements), France (8) and Germany (5) are the countries with the highest number of establishments to make the final list, which includes 23 different European nations.
All of the categories (excluding Africa) have doubled in number this year, with a rise from 5 to 10 in their respective nominations. This is a testimony to how much the classic Neapolitan style, the founding father of all other pizza-making schools, is loved and celebrated.
The foreign candidates have also been presented for the following awards: the S. Pellegrino & Acqua Panna Award for the Best Pizzeria in Asia, the Prosecco DOC Award for the Best Pizzeria in Oceania, the Solania Award for the Best Pizzeria in Africa, and the Olitalia Award for the Best Pizzeria in Japan.
The candidates for the Best Pizzeria in South America and the Best Pizzeria in Brazil will be named at a special event on the evening of June 27th in New York. The final ranking for 50 Top North America will also be announced on this occasion. The North American panel was coordinated for the first time by Mitchell Davis, Chief Strategy Officer of the James Beard Foundation (a non-profit organization which promotes sustainable food culture in America).
Over 500 Italian pizzerias “da non perdere” (not to be missed) are already listed online at www.50toppizza.com. They have been distinguished by the symbol of one “forno” (oven). Instead, at the beginning of June, the 350 pizzerias deemed as “eccellenti” (excellent) will be published online and distinguished by 2 “forni” (ovens). Following this, the exciting annual online countdown will take place until our grand finale on July 23rd, held in the historic and picturesque Teatro Mercadante in Naples.
On this occasion, the best 50 pizzerias in Italy will be named and all special awards and foreign recognitions will be conferred. Our Standards at 50 Top Pizza: https://www.50toppizza.it/i-nostri-principi/
The 50 Top Pizza 2019 list is supported by Pastificio Di Martino S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, Consorzio di Tutela del Prosecco DOC, Olitalia, D’Amico, Birrificio Valsugana, Fior d’Agerola, Solania, Kimbo, Mandara, and Scugnizzo Napoletano.
The judging criteria:
- Finalists were selected from the countries of the European Union
- Every country has at least one entry; some have more than one entry if of high quality
- Votes were cast in a poll of Big 7 readers, across our 1.5million community on social media and by a panel of food experts
- Online reviews, previous media coverage and notable blogs were also included in the overall rating
- The final list is subjective – if we’ve missed out on any must-try pizza places across the EU, please do let us know!
