Black Ivory is the most expensive coffee in the world, and with good reason. The coffee beans used are “naturally refined” by rescued elephants—part of the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation in Chiang Saen—which means they are ingested by these mighty mammals and then released out the back end much later. Earlier this year, the good folks at Mikkeller (26, Ekkamai Soi 10, Lane 2) released Black Ivory Elephant Stout, with the special purpose of helping raise awareness of elephant abuse and mistreatment. Available by the bottle—or on tap at the bar (B300 a glass)—this dark brown beverage is anything but “crappy”, with fabulous coffee flavour infused throughout. And at 8.3 percent alcohol by volume it packs a pachyderm-sized punch.
