Loy Krathong is perhaps the most beautiful of Thailand’s many festivals; a full moon and the twinkle of myriad candle-lit krathongs floating gracefully on stretches of water everywhere make for a sparkling evening. Here then are some suggestions for great places to celebrate this merit-making festival on November 6.
In addition, there is a retelling of the Loy Krathong story in the form of music and dance and other impressive cultural shows. But be warned, the traffic in the area – both car and pedestrian – is sure to be very heavy.
- The Golden Mount festival
The Golden Mount Fair is Bangkok’s biggest temple fair. It is held at Wat Saket during Loy Krathong each year and bustles with food stalls, carnival rides, live music and dance shows, and a host of games and other traditional activities.
- Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel
Don’t fancy fighting the crowds? Well, the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel is offering a luxurious international buffet with entertainment including a beauty contest, Thai classical dance, Nang Noppamas parade and a chance to view the splendid fireworks display which begins at 10pm. A private pier also allows you to float your krathong in comfort.
- Shangri-la Hotel
This riverside hotel celebrates Loy Krathong with cocktails and a sumptuous poolside buffet. Thai dance, masked theatre, Thai boxing and performances by farang Look-toong singers Jonas and Christie are the main entertainment for the evening. You can also participate in the Thai folk dancing after dinner before floating your krathong on the Chao Phraya.
- Chulalongkorn University
Every year the university’s pond is full of krathongs offered by students and the general public. But be careful… tradition has it that you and your loved one will break up if you float your krathongs here together. Fantastic light decorations, concerts performed by students, and booths selling delectable food are further attractions.
- Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside
The dining outlets at the Ramada Plaza Bangkok Menam Riverside will be doing brisk business during Loy Krathong. The hotel’s Terrace@72 and Wave restaurants both look out onto the hotel’s wide river frontage. Hence this is a popular spot for local families and hotel guests to celebrate the festival and enjoy the spectacular fireworks display. The hotel is offering a special Loy Krathong rate for a Deluxe river-view room over 6-7 November. The package includes a Gala Dinner Buffet and free krathongs.
