The permanent dining venue worth Waiting For
Before you set foot in CLARA restaurant, here are a few things worth knowing that might make your dining experience a bit more interesting.
Who is Clara?
CLARA restaurant is named after Clara Del Corso-Martena, the wife, best friend and business partner of Chef Christian Martena who also co-own Sensi Italian restaurant in Bangkok, reopened the kitchens of Strand Hotel in Yangon and worked as Executive Chef at Six Senses on Koh Samui. Before CLARA, the pair initiated a one-table pop-up concept, Waiting For Clara, as an amuse bouche to the recently and officially opened permanent project. Now that the wait is over, you can easily find Chef Christian cooking fine modern Italian fare in the open-style kitchen and greeting diners at their tables for feedback, while Maitre D’ Clara takes care of the front of the house with genuine hospitality. Reservations are better made in advance.
Why Moments and not courses?
On the menu, you will notice that the food is served in Moments instead of courses. The three options are: Menu in 7 Moments (B2,680; B1,680 with Wine Trails), Menu in 9 Moments (B3,080; B1,980 with Wine Trails) and A La Carte in 3 Moments (B2,480). The impact of word change signifies moments from Chef Christian’s culinary journey around his native roots which reflects his personal contemporary interpretation of traditional Italian cuisine through seasonal local and imported ingredients. As imagination runs amok, the aperitivo and a few first dishes literally arrive in little moments. If you do a blind tasting, the true Italian flavours are definitely injected although, visually and texture-wise, they are creatively and elegantly reconstructed.
How is everything looking so artsy?
The bauhaus-style villa used to be Villa Yen Akat exhibition hall. From the entrance to the interior, it feels like strolling past an art garden and sitting in an art gallery. Hands down for the tasteful ambience. VAL’s sculptures outside, paintings and drawings by abstract artist Somboon Hormtientong in the backdrop, Matteo Massevry’s night lighting and furniture from P. Tendercool with leather high chairs tattooed by Tantai; CLARA effortlessly celebrates aesthetics. So during dinner, don’t forget to take in all the surrounding details.
