The Neilson Hays Library is again unable to host its normal bi-annual book sale in November due to Covid-19 virus risks. Instead, the library will hold a smaller book sale spaced out over two weeks (three weekends) from Saturday, Nov. 7 to Sunday, Nov. 22 during regular library hours from 9:30-17:00.
Book sale visitors are invited to browse and buy from a selection of fiction and non-fiction books in English, Thai, as well as a selection of books in French and German, donated by Neilson Hays Library supporters or withdrawn from the library shelves. Whether your book preference is science fiction, the latest thrillers, art, science or philosophy, the library has something for you. There is also a lovely selection for kids and some stunning old and rare books. Prices start at only 20 baht.
The book sale will be held inside the library’s garden café. Due to limited space, the only books for sale at any point are the ones being displayed in the café. The library will replenish books daily as space opens up on the tables. So visitors are advised to drop by a few times rather than coming once and expecting to see everything. Library staff cannot go and find specific books or genres from the boxes in the back. They encourage visitors to bring their own bags in order to help reduce waste. Neilson Hays Library tote bags can also be purchased from the cashier.
In addition to the book sale, on Nov. 7-8 there will be a farmers’ market in the library’s courtyard. With delicious food and drinks, fresh produce to buy and some fantastic lifestyle stalls, the library hopes that this will be a great addition to the book sale.
Only 10 book sale buyers will be allowed inside the café at a time. At busy times, staff may ask visitors to wait outside to prevent overcrowding, but they will try to ensure that everyone is served quickly. The following measures will be in place to protect visitors from Covid-19:
- Each visitor must have his/her body temperature checked upon entering the café. If your temperature exceeds 38°C you will not be permitted to enter. Please be mindful of other people’s health and don’t visit if you feel unwell.
- Each visitor must wear a mask at all times while inside.
- Hand sanitizer will be provided at the entrance.
- Each visitor must sign in and out either by scanning the library’s QR code, or on the café’s sign-in sheet.
Anyone who has unwanted books or magazines to contribute to the sale can drop them off at the library between 9:30-17:00 from Tuesday to Sunday. All proceeds go toward the upkeep of the landmark building and the library’s educational and arts programs.
