Located alongside the Chao Phraya river, in Bangkok’s northwestern district of Dusit, the Opium Spa by Sodashi offers an ideal retreat to recover and rejuvenate in a peaceful environment. The spa is part of the luxurious riverside city resort The Siam, and is accessed by following a staircase down into an opulent and elegantly designed entrance hall, dubbed the Opium Den. Furnished with a set of grey sofas surrounding a small indoor koi pond, and dominated by massive dark wood carved wall hangings, it’s a fitting foretaste to the rest of the spa’s design, which is, same as the hotel, inspired by the Art Deco jazz age of the 1920s, featuring marble flooring, geometrical patterns and a high contrast colour scheme.
In addition to several single and double treatment rooms, the spa features a Hammam-inspired bath with dry steam saunas, steam showers and Jacuzzis, as well as numerous other facilities, including a Muay Thai boxing ring, a gym, a Sak Yant tattoo studio, and a retro-styled nail and hair salon—catering to customers’ wellness needs in every aspect.
The spa menu offers an extensive selection of treatments, reaching from facials and body and massage therapies, to tailored multi-day spa therapy programs to suit individual needs. It also offers a kids and teen spa treatment menu, as well as various complimentary wellness programs such as yoga and meditation classes and a personal trainer.
All of the products used in the spa therapies are from the Australian brand Sodashi, which in Sanskrit translates to “wholeness, purity and radiance”. These all-natural skin and body care products are free of any chemicals, and created by only using natural sources from the earth and sea, including pure plant extracts and essential oils of the finest, therapeutic grade.
The spa’s signature treatment is their Muay Thai Massage (B3,500/60min, B4,900/90min), a Western-style whole body oil treatment enhanced by traditional Thai techniques. Before the treatment, guests are greeted with a cup of soothing tea and have the choice between two high-quality Sodashi essential oils. As the treatment begins, the skilled masseuse applies slow strokes and firm pressure to ease built-up stress. This stronger than average massage focuses on muscular tensions and is perfect for fitness recovery. It helps the body to release any blockages, knots and toxins, and will realign and relax the muscles by offering improved movement and circulation. After feeling fully relaxed, guests are offered a light snack of fruit, served with a dollop of yoghurt and honey, as well as some tea in the Opium Den.
