Slowly but surely, romance is returning to Bangkok’s riverfront. More and more, both planners, preservationists and perspicacious tourists are being drawn back to the banks of the Chao Phraya River for recreation, relaxation and all the best of what tropical nights can bring.
No wonder then that Jazz by the River feels like an idea whose time has come – in fact, is long overdue. Between now and the end of February, the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel, long a mainstay of river life and one of the main attractions along historic Charoen Krung Road, has invited locally renowned saxophonist Aht Kalayanakupt to perform every Friday and Saturday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at its Riverside Terrace restaurant and bar.
While the self-styled “Kenny G. of Thailand,” and “Thailand’s Got Talent” star, toots out haunting ballads that seem to go perfectly with the sweet mood of cooling sunsets and the ebb and flow of barges and cruise boats on the currents. For better measure, the Terrace will be mounting a one-of-a-kind outdoor barbecue, featuring tiger prawns and short ribs off the grill. Meet friends, meditate or just yield to the easy seduction of mellow blue sounds accompanying the city’s most charming night views.
These are evenings to mark on a calendar, evenings that make memories – a perfect match for the winter month’s most comfortable climate, and a special homage to Thailand’s jazz-loving monarch set along “The River of Kings.”
