It’s official: Siam Center, the shopping mall sandwiched between Siam Paragon and Siam Discovery, is due to reopen to the public on January 11. According to the media bumpf, THB 1.8 billion (US$ 600 million) has been poured into giving the iconic fashion-orientated mall a makeover, with that grand figure matched by a grand claim that the project is the “biggest collaborative initiative in retail development ever undertaken in Thailand”. The theme of the new-look Siam Center is “Ideaopolis”, the “city of ideas”, and collaborations with famous international and Thai artists are promised, the aim being to “bring the unexpected back” and make visitors “feel they are coming to a new venue every time”. After media previews on Wednesday and Thursday, including a mini-concert by American rapper Nicki Minaj, doors to the grand opening party will swing open at 6pm this Friday, the first 1,000 visitors all receiving a gift voucher. Brave the crowds and you can expect an exhibition of original Andy Warhol artworks, a fashion display by Comme des Garçons and Yohji Yamamoto as well as leading Thai designers, plus performances by Thai and international pop stars and DJs. We’ll bring you more once we’ve rediscovered it this week..
