A bare-concrete coffee haven in the heart of Phra Khanong.
When Teerawat Buranaprasopchai and Maytika Panjaroen first set off on their working holiday to Australia, both were in search of something new, a new skill to gain when abroad.
Teerawat found his at Manhattan Grind where he worked for two years before later moving to Sydney’s most beautiful cafe, The Grounds of Alexandria, and finally Pablo & Rusty’s–when he decided to really delve into the world of specialty coffee. Maytika similarly found hers first at a small cafe in Surry Hills before advancing to Three Williams and finally Pablo & Rusty’s, Sydney’s most well-known coffee roastery.
In a shoe box like configuration at the bottom of 26 House in Phra Khanong, the couple have brought their Australian coffee skills back to Bangkok. Single Lane takes its name not only from the store’s shape but also its mission to educate customers about single origin coffee, which the pair rotate weekly.
“If you go to other cafes you might get espresso yen or caramel macchiato, but you won’t find that here,” Teerawat tells us. Instead, Single Lane focuses on an Australian-style espresso menu, pour over coffee and cold brew. Non-coffee fans will be pleased to find matcha from Bangkok’s matcha specialist Peace 和 House Oriental as well as the couple’s very own quirky creations: Maytika with the Summerest, a blend of coffee, peach tea, prune juice and Chinese dates; and Teerawat with Fudge, an iced dark chocolate mix with cacao blend, milk and homemade chocolate ice cubes.
In line with coffee from down under, the pair also serve popular Aussie pastries like au bon chocolate and plain croissants which come courtesy of Conkey’s Bakery, run by long-term Australian expat Michael Conkey. There’s also healthier dessert options with vegan cakes by Meloiz Healthy, at the affordable price of B100.
While in Australia the pair weren’t simply grinding your daily brew however, they were taking on the local gurus in competition. Maytikha won 1st place at both Pablo & Rusty’s Latter Art Smackdown and Di Pacci Smackdown in 2017 while in the same year Teerawat placed 2nd in Almond Breeze Latte Art and 3rd in Grinders Coffee Latte Art. With an impressive selection of coffee and awards to back the cause, Singe Lange is certainly one worth a try.
