Making Music History
Gamelatron at Anantara Riverside Bangkok Resort
One of Anantara’s brand promises is to connect modern travellers to unique cultural experiences. This time, the resort is arranging Bangkok’s first and only Gamelatron, a sonic-kinetic gamelan installation by artist Aaron Taylor Kuffner.
Originating from Indonesia, Gamelan is a type of percussive ensemble with equivalents found in terms of instrument and tonality throughout Southeast Asia. American conceptual artist and musician Kuffner spent years familiarising himself with gamelan culture in Java and Bali before creating a modern form. The result is an original composition in ghostly automation of a traditional gamelan performance.
The sanctuary for the mind and evolution of consciousness will take place in the reception hall of Anantara Riverside at the lobby. This one-of-a-kind Gamelatron Pohon Electrum 2015 is a vision of powder-coated steel, silicon and bronze customised to the space to maximise acoustics and visual impact.
The over 60 Gamelatrons that Aaron has created have been displayed at some of the world’s prestigious institutions and collectives such as the Smithsonian to the Venice Biennale to Burning Man.
