Xeree is a middle-aged transgender with conservative ideas. She is facing a new problem in her life. She has to see a psychiatrist after discovering that her grandson’s face resembles Joshua Wong, the famous young protester from Hong Kong, when wearing a new pair of glasses. Xeree’s far right-wing instincts take her toll on. She gets furious and will follow her violent instincts in her heart up to the point of murdering a family member.
The play –in Thai language with English subtitles- is a creation of a troop of young comedians who form the Qrious Theatre. The young author of the play, Radtai Lokutarapol, is interested in Thailand’s society problems and “The Night I loved Joshua Wong” looks at the source of violence problems caused by different points of view within families. This will sound like a familiar topic to Thais who have been divided in recent years on political issues. “I feel there is really a generation gap between the baby boomers and the Y generation,” says Radtai.
What kind of beliefs push people to forget the bonds of family? The beliefs that define people’s identities are to be questioned. If feeling wrong, how does the man find his right position in the society? Is violence the answer?
The personalities described in the play- particularly transgender Xeree and the figure of Joshua Wong- are symbolic. “The transgender is confronted with the struggling around her own identity. At the same time, she adds colour to the dialogue as she uses a lot of Bangkok gay slang expressions. While the figure of Joshua Wong characterises all the youngsters of Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore or Vietnam. These are generations fighting for recognition looking for achievement,” tells Radtai Lokutarapol.
