Making merit is the foundation of Thai culture. Giving alms is a common daily rite. Throwing them, however, is not so common. During the festival, offerings such as rice, bottled water, and instant noodles are literally thrown into baskets on the floor. This is done to honour spirits that don’t have relatives, as well as to help poor people in their times of need. This is why thousands of people gather around the festivities for free food.
