When the Moon is Full, Let’s Celebrate with Mooncakes

Ahead of this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, here is a list of different mooncakes to make your celebration of the Moon Festival as pleasant as the legend has it.  

The Chinese enjoy mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is also known as the Moon Festival. Calculating from the population of China and the number of Chinese descendants around the world, we can estimate that more than 1.3 billion mooncakes are consumed each year during the Moon Festival.

In 2021, the Mid-Autumn Festival falls on September 21. The Chinese officially have a three-day public holiday from September 19 to 21. Traditionally, it falls on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar, which is in September or early October on the Gregorian calendar. The festival was originally created to worship the moon and celebrate the harvest.

The Moon Festival is the second most important festival in China after Chinese New Year, with a history dating back over 3,000 years. Mid-Autumn Festival is also celebrated in many Asian communities outside China. It’s a reunion time for families. The traditional celebration has been carried on to the modern day and is comprised of family gatherings for dinners, worshiping the moon while making beautiful offerings, lighting paper lanterns, and never-to-be-missed – eating mooncakes. A lovely Chinese descendant lady once told me her sweet childhood memory about a Moon-worshiping tea party. The highlight of the evening for her was the beautiful decoration of the offering table, and the tea party gathering after the ceremony among friends and family while admiring the full moon.

The festival is about lunar appreciation and moon watching, and mooncakes are regarded as a delicacy. For non-Chinese to enjoy the mooncakes even more than ever, here is a legend about the little round cake that became a festival title. Today, mooncakes are eaten during the festival to commemorate this legend. It all started during the Yuan dynasty (A.D.1280-1368) when China was ruled by the Mongolians. Leaders from the preceding Sung dynasty (A.D.960-1280) formed a resistance operation. They schemed how to coordinate a secret rebellion. As the Moon Festival was drawing near, the resistance leaders ordered the making of special cakes. Inside each mooncake was stuffed a message with the outline of the attack. On the night of the Moon Festival, the rebels successfully overthrew the government and this was followed with the establishment of the Ming dynasty (A.D. 1368-1644).
